Dear Dr. Seckel, I am interested in labioplasty or labial reduction. My jeans and other pants cause serious irritation and I need this done for comfort. I have heard that you do a laser labiolasty. Is the laser labioplasty better and if so why. How long is the recovery period? Thank you, Janice, Boston.

Dear Janice,

I do use the laser to perform a laser labiaplasty or labial reduction and I believe the laser has several advantages for labiaplasty or labial reduction surgery. The labia minora are mucous membranes and are quite different from the normal skin on the body. The labia have more blood vessels than the other skin areas and the labial skin is very thin. The laser is an ideal method for incising thin tissue like the labia and the laser labiaplasty causes much less bleeding than the scalpel labiaplasty or labial reduction.

There is much less trauma to the labia with the laser labiaplasty. During scalpel labiaplasty the tissue to be removed is often clamped with a clamp to prevent bleeding. This clamping technique crushes the clamped labial tissue and this crushed tissue if left behind can delay wound healing and create scarring.

The laser labiaplasty or labial reduction requires no clamping because the laser seals the blood vessels as the tissue is removed, thus there is less bleeding and less tissue damage than when the clamping technique is used.

The laser also seals the nerve endings as the tissue is removed and in my experience laser incisions are less painful.

In my opinion the laser labiaplasty or laser labial reduction has many advantages and is the way I prefer to do labiaplasty or labial reduction. There is less bleeding and less scarring than with the clamp crush technique.

The labia are delicate, highly innervated sensitive parts of the body and careful non traumatic technique like the laser labiaplasty in my opinion is the most modern and delicate way to do this procedure.

Although you are considering laser labiaplasty or labial reduction for comfort reasons, many women consider labiaplasty for aesthetic or cosmetic reasons. With today’s tight fitting, thin clothing many women find the visibility of the intimate detail of their labia disturbing but still want to wear the clothing. For these women the laser labiaplasty is an option.

Recovery time varies with the patient. The wounds are healed fairly quickly in a week to 10 days. The sutures I use to close the wound dissolve so no suture removal is required. Vigorous physical activity is limited for 3 weeks and I recommend you wait 4-6 weeks for sexual activity.

If you would like further information please contact me.

Thank you for your important question.
